Since January 19th, in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of my Enviroart blog on WordPress, I have been publishing essays that I first posted 10 years ago. This is the last of such postings for now.

This is a portrait of my daughter at 4 years old I painted some years ago when I was studying classical portraiture.

Everything is as it should

February 7, 2008 by Enviroart

I feel like saying today that everything is as it should. We work so hard to find a purpose for our life sometimes, struggle to get out of problems and bad situations when all there is to do is stop and listen. Open yourself up to the wisdom of the universe. Meditate and listen. Ask a question before going to sleep at night and trust that the answer will come the next morning and it will. Inspiration… It is talked about in the Tao and a lot of spiritual leaders talk about it also. The Dalai Lama said that  “The purpose of life is to be happy”.

But happiness does not come from material possessions it comes from within. It is not easy when other people make demands on us. When we think we are not important enough to give ourselves peace of mind and happiness.  WE must work to achieve this.

Depressed or felling abandoned? You are part of a whole. We are all alone in our search for the truth but at the same time we are all part of a whole. You think you don’t matter? That your life makes no difference? Well, you are wrong because your life does make a difference. You are important, be it to teach someone something, be it to learn something from a life teacher you will meet or have already met. Only by letting go and accepting, by opening your eyes and your ears to receive the truth will you find peace.

I know I sound like a philosopher today but this is the truth I found. Try to live more by intuition. Try to follow your inner light even if it feels pretty dimmed. You might not feel it right now, you might even think there is none inside of you, but there is. Unfortunately, most of us have a hard time following what Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe once said “Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least”. And this is sad most people let them.

I have been reading the Tao Te Ching lately and I find it very difficult to understand the subtlety of its wisdom. I know it is hard to accept that things are as it should  when you look at the world, pollution, violence, hunger. All this unfairness! Why is this? We think it is worse now than before but it is not really. There has always been wars and violence, unevenness. Nothing is thrown our way that we cannot handle. We must go forward and find the courage to go on, to learn from it.

We hear a lot about suicide lately. The new thing is to try to see the early warning signs and influence the person to stay alive. But the truth is only that person is walking in her shoes. Only this person must find his or her own truth. All we can do is spark something. Each person must be ready to receive the truth before they are able to accept it.

When you are really discouraged, just remember that all things are temporary in life. Nothing is forever. It will pass. All you have to do is hang on for now and receive the lesson. Tomorrow will be better, even if tomorrow takes a few weeks, months, years, it will come. And remember your uniqueness makes you important. There is only one “You” and you are important. You don’t need to try to be happy, it cannot be forced especially if you have certain ideas about happiness, especially if you think you don’t know what will make you happy, or if you think you will never be happy. You will be happy again. You will. Life is a wheel turning, changing all the time. When you’re down, there is nowhere to go but up. A good way to improve your life is to find something to do for someone else and try to focus outside yourself. Everything is as it should and you too can bring something worthwhile to someone’s life, indeed to the world.

I have been looking for something I lost recently and went through a bunch of papers sitting in a pile near my desk. At the bottom, I found this quote I wrote years ago with the intention of displaying it where I can see it everyday, which I didn’t do yet:

BE THANKFUL !

No matter how good or bad you have it

Wake up each day thankful for your life

Someone, somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs

Instead of thinking about what you’re missing

Try thinking about what you have, that everyone else is missing.

It reminded me that many years ago, I wrote a blog about finding a way to influence the first thought of the day in order to influence your mood. Essentially, if your first though is joyous, the rest of the day being off t o a good start, there is a good chance that your attitude will make it so that the day shapes up pretty good.

Here is a reblog of my own blog from 2009 – To see the original go to : https://enviroart.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/first-thought-of-the-day/

First thought of the day

I have been researching how I can influence the first thought of my day with the idea that if you wake up and your first thought is joyous, then the rest f the day is off to a good start and should have a joyous background that can probably be maintained throughout the day.

Looking into this, after asking many people what their first thought of the day was, I heard a lot of simplistic things like I am hungry or I have to pee, but this does not depict the first mood of the day. This only speaks of the body. Although, I found that in general, people are not starting their day with a very positive thought, unless they are on vacations. As a matter of fact, a lot of us wake up thinking “Oh no! Not another day at work, I’m still tired and want to sleep”, basically equaling: “I’m pissed off I have to get up, I’m resentful I have to work”, things along those lines.

It has happened sometimes that I have awaken exited and wanting to get up and accomplish something right away. I am trying to figure out what is the key element between these two states. Why are some days starting off better than others?

Sunshine is a big influence in our moods and how we feel about waking up. After a few sunny days, life just seems better and more exciting. But it is not all. I am convinced that our last thought before going to sleep and our adventures of the night, dreams and nightmares, are influencing our general mood when we wake up, our first thought and your day.

Have you ever had a wonderful dream, full of love and tenderness? You then wake up feeling great, or you come back to reality and are disappointed. But at any rate, you did experience it and you know it exists somewhere, and at some level, it fills you with hope.  What about a terrible nightmare that sends your heart racing and really scares you, giving you a glimpse of hell? In our mind, these experiences are real. They are night adventures which are sometimes difficult to leave behind and should not be left behind altogether. I find dreams are great teachers sometimes.

One of the ways to influence the first thought is to control the last thought. To reflect, as you go to sleep, on the people and things in your life that you are grateful for, no matter how small and far between, gives you hope. This becomes a building block on which you can start to construct the life you want. The only way, or at least the best way to effect change in your life is to find yourself in a positive hopeful mood, so it is of the utmost importance to be able to influence this first thought and, if we find ourselves waking up in a negative mood, have a strategy in place to turn this around as quickly as possible.

Going to sleep with thankful thoughts will influence your first thought in a positive way.

In October 2007, the Science & Vie magazine (1081: 84-89) reported that a team of researchers had just highlighted the neuronal way a souvenir takes before arriving to the lapse of memory. This team of scientists from the Center of neuroscience and the Institute of cognitive sciences of the University of Colorado thus seems to indicate that it are possible to forget certain memories if one decides to do so. Thanks to cerebral imagery technique, scientists now understand the process of memorizing and have identified the three specific areas of the brain involved. The three stages of memory are: the encoding (the memorizing of the feelings and details of the souvenirs), the storage which preserves them and the recovery when the incident is being recalled.  The lapse of memory can thus have three causes connected to one of these stages. By means of the functional imagery by magnetic resonance (FIMR), researchers identified the area of the brain which was most active when the patients forgot the memories as being the pre-frontal region of the cortex, located in front of cranium. Indeed, this zone takes control over the other areas generally involved in memory retention and prevents their normal activation (the amygdala which deals with the emotions, the hippocampus for the memory and the visual cortex as well as the thalamus which deal with the visual treatment), preventing the preservation of the memory. Another experiment, this time conducted with rats, made it possible to identify a drug able to erase a memory selectively. Psychoanalysts have different opinions regarding the therapeutic effectiveness of erasing bad memories. Some think that it is important to remember the traumatism in order to work past it because, according to them, certain events can never be completely forgotten and can resurface later with adverse consequences. In fact, the experiment proceeded over a short period of time and gives no indication whether the memory is forgotten forever or if this is only a short term situation. However, this opens new possibilities for the treatment of post-traumatic stress, phobias or other emotionally traumatizing experiences.
